The British soap Hollyoaks have always been early with LGBT-storylines. First up was the bisexual crossdresser Kris Fisher. He moved to Hollyoaks from Ireland to study (and to get away from his family and old friends so that he could start again) in September 2006.
The actor said about his character; “He is so 'out there', in your face and ready to shock at every turn. Every day he creates a new drama so who knows what the unconventional Kris will trigger. Kris is a non-conformist. If he wakes up in the morning and wants to dye his hair blue and stick a safety pin through his nose, then that's exactly what he'll do. The character is very colourful, but also very controversial.
He is what he is; a bolshy, ballsy lad from Belfast who doesn't give a damn. He doesn't care what people think about him. He goes out of his way to shock people and has so much confidence in himself, that no one can intimidate him. He's also very witty. I can be funny yeah, but I'm not quite as sharp as him. And of course, he can pull anyone he wants! I love Kris, he's a great character to play. When I come home from work every day, I have a smile on my face.”

The first story with a gay couple (starting 2006) were the amazing McDean story with the seventeen-year-old boy John Paul McQueen who fell in love with his best friend – eighteen-year-old Craig Dean. Craig fell in love with John Paul too, but he was in denial and stayed with his girlfriend. This is Hollyoaks' most famous storyline, with viewers all over the world. Sounds interesting? Their second story with a gay couple (starting 2008) also involved John Paul. And a catholic priest. I'm not a big fan of this storyline for the simple reason that I like McDean more. But I can't deny that this storyline is very good too. And now – their latest big storyline. The FtM transgendered Jason. This story is VERY interesting and I'm anxious to find out what's going to happen with him under 2011. Jason was born Jasmine, but now he's coming out to family and friends as a gay boy – needless to say, not everyone is happy about that. And how will Jasmines boyfriend react when she tells him she wants to be a boy, but still wants to be with him? This story you can watch on YouTube here: Jasmine/Jason on YouTube
